The pandemic marked the beginning of its consolidation in Spain, but consumer preferences have consolidated the undisputed prominence of e-commerce in the purchase and sale of all types of products in our country.
An unquestionable fact that has led companies to invest in technology and bet on digital strategies.
Strategies designed on the basis of new consumer habits, but which must also be advanced to the trends that will mark online commerce in the coming months.
This evolution of consumer preferences is reflected in the study Radiografía de los Hábitos de Consumo E-Commerce 2023 en España, carried out by the market research company Toluna, in collaboration with the agency BCW.

The study recognizes six short- and medium-term trends that can help retailers and businesses differentiate themselves from the competition:

Sustainability

According to this analysis, consumers are increasingly interested in more sustainable options and are demanding greater social and environmental commitment from companies.
In fact, a large majority of respondents (76%) express the importance of sustainability in commercial relationships or online shopping.

Consumers investigate and scrutinize brands and empathize with those that share their values and, depending on their behavior, reward or punish them.
This is the emergence of the “responsible consumer”, who is becoming increasingly important in the market.
This consumer particularly values the circular economy and in fact 86% prefer to buy from companies that apply circular economy practices.

2. Shoppertainment

Shoppertainment is based on the organization of commercial activities focused on demonstrating, promoting and selling products to customers digitally, remotely and in livestreaming video format.
This is the most popular of all formats and consists of one or two presenters or influencers showing live how a product works, with direct access to its purchase.

3. Connection with social networks

Thirty-eight percent of respondents showed a preference for shopping through apps and social networks.
In fact, Spain is even ahead of France and Great Britain in shopping on these channels.
Despite this, there is still a lot of room for growth in this type of shopping in our country.

Selling through social networks can improve multichannel sales, as these platforms maximize the reach of e-commerce.
For example, the use of TikTok as a sales space can be a very useful tool when it comes to increasing engagement and conversions through practices such as Live Shopping and interactive ads.

4. Use of artificial intelligence

For now, it seems to interest consumers much more than shopping in the metaverse.
Artificial intelligence is being used to improve and personalize the shopping experience for customers and optimize search engines.
Thus, e-commerce-focused companies will be able to take advantage of AI-powered programs to offer better service and save time.
In fact, according to one of Gartner’s strategic planning assumptions, by 2025, half of all companies will have devised AI orchestration platforms to make it operational.

5. Flexible payments

Flexible payments are another of the most repeated demands among the consumers surveyed in the study.
Some solutions such as BuyNowPayLater or the possibility of making payments in cryptocurrencies stand out.
Online shoppers are concerned about online payments and therefore companies must take into account the security of digital payments and be transparent in their terms and conditions.
In short, the online shopper appreciates that payment methods are secure and fit their needs, such as paying in installments or through financing.

6. Holograms

If until recently they were a product of fiction, protagonists only of the big screen, holograms have become a reality, an online sales resource that has yet to be developed and perfected but is increasingly demanded and valued by consumers.
Visits to physical stores through a hologram and the personalization of products through AI are the most visualized future trends, according to those surveyed by Toluna.
More distant seems to them the purchase through a simple blink of an eye with virtual reality glasses or home deliveries by drones, but they do not rule out that they will be a reality in the not too distant future.

In short, companies that want to increase their sales through e-commerce cannot be oblivious to these six trends.
They will have to be prepared to adopt rapid changes as consumer expectations and needs change.
The process of implementing new strategies for which it will be very useful to have the right software.
